Connect to FlutterFlow: List and Single-Item View
In this tutorial, we'll learn how to connect Xano, a no-code backend platform, with Flutter Flow, a powerful front-end builder. We'll explore how to make API calls from Flutter Flow to Xano, display data from Xano in a list view, and create a single page view for each item in the list. Let's dive in!
Prerequisites
Before we begin, ensure you have the following:
- A Xano account (sign up for free at https://xano.io)
- A Flutter Flow account (sign up for free at https://flutterflow.io)
- A basic understanding of Flutter Flow's UI builder
Step 1: Set Up Your Xano API
- Log in to your Xano workspace and create a new database with a table called "Places." This table should have fields for
id(integer),name(text),location(text), andimage(object with a nestedurlfield). - Add some sample data to the "Places" table, including a few different locations with names, locations, and image URLs.
- In the Xano API section, locate the endpoint for the "Places" table (e.g.,
/api/places). This endpoint will return a list of all the places in your database. - Also, note the endpoint for fetching a single place record (e.g.,
/api/places/{id}). This endpoint takes anidparameter to retrieve a specific place.
Step 2: Connect Xano to Flutter Flow
- Open your Flutter Flow project and navigate to the "API Calls" section on the left sidebar.
- Click "Add API Call" and give it a name (e.g., "Get Places").
- Paste the endpoint URL from Xano for fetching the list of places (e.g.,
/api/places). - Click "Test API Call" to ensure the connection is successful.
- In the "Response" section, select the JSON fields you want to display in your app (e.g.,
id,name, location, andimage.url). - Repeat steps 2-5 to create another API call for fetching a single place record (e.g., "Get Single Place"). Replace the
{id}portion of the endpoint URL with[id]and define theidvariable in the "Variables" section.
Step 3: Display the List of Places
- In the Flutter Flow UI builder, add a
ListViewcomponent to your homepage. - Inside the
ListView, add aCardcomponent with anImageandTextwidgets for displaying the place's image, name, and location. - Select the
ListViewand navigate to the "Backend Query" section on the right sidebar. - Choose the "Get Places" API call from the dropdown menu.
- Enable "Generate Dynamic Children" and specify the variable name (e.g.,
listOfPlaces). - In the
Imagewidget, set thepathproperty tolistOfPlaces.item.image.urlto display the image URL from Xano. - In the
Textwidgets, set the text value tolistOfPlaces.item.nameandlistOfPlaces.item.locationto display the place's name and location.
Step 4: Create a Single Page View
- In Flutter Flow, create a new page for displaying the single place view (e.g., "Single View").
- On the new page, select the entire page and navigate to the "Backend Query" section on the right sidebar.
- Choose the "Get Single Place" API call from the dropdown menu.
- Under "Additional Variables," set the
idparameter value tolistOfPlaces.item.id. This will pass theidof the selected place from the list view to the single view page. - Add an
Imagewidget and set itspathproperty toimage.urlto display the place's image. - Add
Textwidgets for the place'snameandlocation, setting their text values accordingly.
Step 5: Navigate to the Single Page View
- In the list view, select one of the
Cardcomponents representing a place. - In the "Action Flow Editor" on the right sidebar, add an "On Tap" action.
- Choose "Navigate to Single View" and specify the
idparameter name (e.g.,placeId). - Under "Parameters," select "Pass" and set the value to
listOfPlaces.item.id. This will pass the selected place'sidto the single view page.
Step 6: Test Your App
- In Flutter Flow, click the "Run App in Test Mode" button to launch the app in a simulated environment.
- Verify that the list of places from Xano is displayed correctly on the homepage.
- Tap on one of the places in the list to navigate to the single view page, ensuring the correct place's details are shown.
Congratulations! You've successfully connected Xano with Flutter Flow, displaying data from your Xano backend in a Flutter Flow app. This integration empowers you to build powerful applications without writing complex backend code, leveraging the strengths of both Xano and Flutter Flow.
