Secure by Design: A Comprehensive Guide to Building Secure with Xano (ebook cover)
Ungated summary

How to secure an application built on Xano

Secure by Design walks through security on Xano in five parts: security controls, monitoring, backup and recovery, security processes, and compliance. This summary covers the essentials of each, so you can check your own backend against it before you download the full guide. It applies whether you are building a rapid prototype or a mission-critical enterprise system.

Security controls: decide who and what can reach your data

Start with isolation. Every Xano workspace is single-tenant and containerized, and paid plans run on dedicated infrastructure. Custom plans add multiple tenants for data, resource and regional isolation, self-hosting on AWS, Azure, GCP or on-prem, a dedicated IP, and Cloud Armor to help prevent distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

Then control access. Xano has role-based access control at the platform and application level (roles and permissions), and enterprise SSO with GitHub, Google and Microsoft Entra ID, with SAML supported. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, with SSL/TLS protection.

Set the rules once. Your team defines one set of workspace rules (auth patterns, identity stack, who can access what, where data lives, which code dependencies are allowed, and which review gates a change must clear) and every build inherits them, whichever person or AI agent is building.

Monitoring: see what is running and who changed it

The workspace is the live system, not documentation that drifts. Every endpoint, every change, and who or what made it is visible. Audit logs give detailed, searchable information about changes and activity in a workspace; request history shows what each call did; enhanced API logging lets you monitor and audit API usage with customizable log retention. When an agent makes a change, it is attributed, timestamped and reviewable the same way a person's change is. With Xano observability you can trace any request to the exact step that failed, then debug it, function by function.

Backup and recovery: get back to a known state

Paid plans include rolling backups: 7 days on Essential and 14 days on Pro. Version history and version rollback let you restore logic as well as data, and branching lets you test a change away from production. Custom plans add high availability and 24/7 monitoring.

Security processes: review before release

Nothing reaches production except the immutable release your team inspected and promoted. Policy is enforced during the build, not reported after the fact. Workflow tests run before a release, CLI sandbox environments keep experiments away from live data, and review gates decide what ships. That matters more when AI writes part of the code; see how AI code governance works.

Compliance: what your auditor will ask for

Xano holds or supports SOC 2 Type II, SOC 3, ISO 27001, ISO 27701, ISO 9001, HDS, HIPAA, GDPR and DPF. Essential and above include GDPR, ISO, and SOC 2 and 3 compliance. HIPAA, with a signed BAA, is a paid add-on on the Pro plan and included on Custom plans; the HIPAA guide covers it in depth. For an audit, Xano gives you audit logs, full request history, version history and rolling backups: the record of what ran, when, and on whose approval.

Data protection: minimize, and keep the exit open

PII handling is stateless, request history has an off-switch, and Xano does not train on customer data. Everything you build is exportable: your data lives in a standard PostgreSQL database, and your logic, schema and tests are readable and translatable to the language of your choice, with AI assistance and a human in the loop.
