Isolated environments

Why does Xano use Docker?

Every Xano instance is packaged in containers with all of the parts it needs, so it runs the same way in development, testing, and production.

Docker gives every Xano instance a stable, isolated environment

Xano mainly utilizes Docker to bring stability to each instance within the platform. Docker is a tool designed to make it easier to create, deploy, and run applications by using containers. Containers allow us to package up an instance with all of the parts it needs, such as libraries and other dependencies for stability.

All components of the technology stack will leverage Docker containers. Docker’s virtualization technology will provide us the capability of running your components (PostgreSQL, PHP, Redis, etc.) in the same environment each and every time. This allows a consistent environment for development, testing, and production because the technology runs inside the Docker Engine instead of on the server directly.

Another reason why containers are popular is they lend themselves to Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment (CI/CD). This is a DevOps methodology designed to encourage integration of code into a shared repository often, then deploy code quickly, efficiently while keeping things lightweight.

How you build on it

The same environment, on your laptop

The Xano Engine: your whole backend, packaged to run locally.

The Xano Engine is the Xano backend packaged to run on your machine: a single binary with Postgres built in, with no account and no network. The project pins its version in package.json, so everyone on the team runs the same engine. npm run xano:deploy runs your TypeScript backend on it; when it is ready, one command puts the same code live on Xano’s cloud.
